For instance, MIKO-7 performs automatic selection of maximum possible current in the circuit on the basis of their power constraints thus increasing the accuracy of measurement in comparison with the majority of competing analogue instruments (see the comparison). Measuring current in the equipment of other manufacturers changes discretely – by huge steps, for instance, of 10А, 1А, 0,1А, while the travel of milliohmeter MIKO-7 is as smooth as possible.

In the range of 0.3 ÷ 70 W (0.3; 1; 5; 20; 62) for the avoidance of excessive resistance of low-power windings of electric motors, electromagnets, etc.

  • High level of protection and safety conformance in regard to:

- exceeding of measuring current;
- polarity reversal of cable ends in accumulator storage battery;
- electromotive force (emf) of self-induction.

At disconnection of the measuring cable from transformer bushings or from the instrument as well as at disconnection of the mains cable from the mains or accumulator battery in the course of measurement, emf of self-induction of up to several kV is generated in the disconnected circuit and the electric arc appears in the break point.

MIKO-7 is characterized by the redundant protection against emf of self-induction in case of involuntary disconnection of the measuring cable or power cable protecting users from electric shock and the instrument from being damaged.

- protection grounding contact in the mains plug and safety earthing terminal on the case of the measuring unit
Exceptional measuring current stability

This parameter is extremely important as current instability causes complementary resistance measurement error proportional to the rate of change of the current with the intensity of measuring current from 0.015 to 10A.

Automatic measurement data processing

Apart from the abovementioned characteristics, protection means and service functions the instrument with the advanced SW has the following advantages:

  • Automatic inductive load measurement. The instrument automatically defines the moment of resistance and stops the measuring process;
  • Automatic calculation of relative deviation of winding resistance at three phases against each other;
  • Automatic recalculation of linear resistance of windings, connected with delta or star connection to the phase winding resistance;
  • Automatic recalculation of resistance at current temperature to the resistance at certified temperature (with due regard to winding material);
  • Automatic calculation of deviations measured and normalized to the certified temperature of winding resistance in relation to the certified values of resistances;
  • Automatic calculation of winding temperature based on its measured and certified value of resistance and certified temperature.
Additional measurement modes

Three modes of operation can be set for the instrument:

  • Upon setting of the winding current in "OLTC" mode the current is supplied unless resistance of all winding taps is measured. This allows considerable reduction of the overall measurement time.
  • In "Continuous" mode the decision on stopping of measurement process is taken by the user, monitoring the changes of the measured resistance on the display or after appearing of a special symbol indicating the end of readings receiving on the display.
  • In "Auto-stop" mode the program defines the moment of readings receiving in accordance with a special algorithm and gives the command of stopping. This mode as well as the signal symbol eliminate human-caused errors and increase the accuracy of results counting.
History of measurements stored in the instrument

Designed for viewing, copying and deleting of measurement results, stored in the non-volatile memory of the instrument as well as for performing of various calculations.

  • Drawing up of measurement reports.

Data transmission to the computer and filing of measurement results is performed with the help of a special program developed by the manufacturer.

Power from the mains and external accumulator storage battery

The instrument can be powered from the mains (≃ 110÷220, 330V) and external accumulator battery, for instance, car battery of 12V, providing for mobility and flexibility in application.

For powering the instrument from a car battery, a special cable supplied on order is required.

The instrument is supplied with two software versions: standard and advanced

The instrument can be supplied with two software versions. Advanced software is more sophisticated and mostly functional. Obtaining the advanced version the user gets a number of advantages described above.

Obtaining MIKO-7 with standard software you can activate the advanced version for the evaluation period and get access to new functions. In order to activate this version press “CANCEL” button and input the code "0000000000".

Specific transition from the standard to advanced software can be performed at any time convenient for the user by entering the unique code (see comparison of the basic and advanced SW versions).

In 2015 Siemens Company purchased MIKO-7 instrument for electric resistance measurement. It is still successfully employed by our specialists.  This instrument allows control of drive motor winding parameters and performance of different types of diagnosis of ES1 Lastochka fast-speed electric trains.

Based on the experience of MIKO-7 operation we should state that this instrument is easy to operate, has a simple and understandable interface.  Its main merit, in our opinion, is the function of automatic selection of resistance range.

The instrument can be powered both from the mains and from the car battery, which is its another merit.  However, I would recommend to furnish an in-built battery as it is not always convenient to operate the instrument from an external power source.

The MIKO-7 instrument with updated software has been used by our company since 2012.  It is used for measuring the winding resistance of high-voltage (500 - 630 kW) and low-voltage (0.25 - 250 kW) electric motors and of different transformers. 

The instrument is easy to operate, it is housed in a shock-proof case, and its interface is rather user-friendly. Updated software allows continuous winding resistance measurement with automatic selection of measurement ranges, and automatic conversion of the results of measurements.  Results of measurements can be immediately included into the Protocol. The only drawback, in my opinion, is lack of an independent power source.

Branch IRKUTSKENERGO PJSC IRKUTSK HPP

Specialists of Irkutsk HPP (hydro power plant) have been using the SKB EP instruments for several years. The PKV/M7 instruments were used for measuring time characteristics of moving parts of such circuit breakers as ABB HGI-3 (13.8kV), AREVA HGF-1012 (110kV), SIEMENS 3AP1DT-145 (110kV, 220kV), and 3AP1DT-245 (220kV); the MIKO-2.3 and MIKO-7 instruments are used on electric motors (0.4kV) and the RVR(Z)-20/2000 M-U3, RGNP-110/2000-50UHL1, RDZ-1-110-2000UHL1, and RNDZ-220/2000U1 (13.8/110/220kV) disconnecting devices.

The PKV/M7 instrument meets all our needs in HV circuit breaker diagnosis. It provides convenient control of poles time difference using the PC software that shows defects in a circuit breaker long before they may cause a heavy failure.

The MIKO-2.3 milliohmmeter provides quick output of the results of measurements; it is a universal instrument that integrates four modes in one. The instrument is rather convenient and mobile. But for some circuit breaker models the length of a cable for the milliohmmeter mode is not quite sufficient for convenient instrument manipulation. Battery charge for ‘microohmmeter with account of a current transformer’ mode is sufficient for one measurement only, which extends the diagnosis time, but the instrument has an option of fast battery charge.

The MIKO-7 in the course of operation proved to be rather efficient. The only drawback is non-reliable "crocodile" clips. The instrument has a robust shock-proof housing that “saved” the instrument many times.

The updated software of the milliohmmeter allowed us to save time and eliminate personnel’s mistakes. When we used a voltampermetre we had to carry several instruments, and a battery; their assembly took time, and measurements on a transformer took two hours minimum. Time of measurements using the MIKO-7 is halved or even makes one third of that.

Benefits of the PKV/M7 include: information on the results of measurements and ability to operate the circuit breaker from the instrument. The MIKO-2.3 is rather mobile; the MIKO-7 has a large set of functions and automatic mode of operation.

During the SKB EP instruments operation on the main electric equipment of the plant we did not face any problems, the instruments worked properly, without failures. On the auxiliary equipment the problems with electric motors were timely revealed (inter-winding short circuit, break of windings end).

Specialists of Irkutsk HPP recommend the PKV/M7, MIKO-2.3 and MIKO-7 to all the companies as they are cost-effective analogues of the instruments of foreign manufacture.

MIKO-7 instrument has been used by our electrical laboratory of the Chief Engineer’s Department of Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Manufacturing Plant named after Yu.A. Gagarin since 2013. The microohmmeter is used for measuring DC resistance of transformer windings, electric motors, and for control of transient resistances of 6-110kV oil circuit breakers contacts.

The instrument is simple in use; the basic version of software has a user-friendly interface.

When making measurements on the oil circuit breakers MKP35 and MKP110 the length of wires allows instrument operation without its raising on the measured equipment, which is an advantage as compared to previously used instruments. Moreover, clamps of measurement cables with G-clamps allow their installation using one hand only.

As compared to a classical method using an ampere-voltmeter for measuring the DC resistance in the circuits with inductance, MIKO-7 saves time previously used for the circuit assembly-disassembly, for the process of measurement until the steady-state values of current and voltage are achieved, and for conversion of the data obtained.

MIKO-7 Instrument has been in operation in our Company from June, 27, 2014, till July 25, 2014 for electric equipment repair in the electric repair workshop of CJSC Irkutskenergoremont. Tested were transformers with the capacity from 63 to 10000 kVa (voltage from 0.4 to 35 kV), and electric motors with the capacity from 0.12 to 560 kW (voltage from 0.4 to 6 kV).

During tests the basic software was used and the instrument was powered from AC network 50 Hz.

The instrument is easy to operate, it has a friendly interface. Automatic choice of the range of resistances is the best function for resistance measurement.

Clamps of "crocodile" type combining current and potential conductors ensure simple and reliable connection to the tested equipment.

For consecutive tests on different remote facilities that would be desirable to have an in-built power source.
